We Have Butterflies!

The past few weeks, we have been raising 5 little caterpillars! The little caterpillars that showed up at our door (we ordered them from www.insentlore.com) quickly ate their way to becoming big, fat caterpillars. They cocooned in their original home (a cup) and then the children watched in anticipation as I moved them into the butterfly home.

The butterflies came out of their cocoons last Saturday (so the children missed seeing it), but they were excited to see the final product Monday morning. The five beautiful Painted Lady butterflies ate oranges for a few days but seemed to outgrow their quarters. This morning we let them go in our backyard. The children were thrilled and squealed as each butterfly flew up, up, and away. We have seen a few of the butterflies around our yard still today!

Rainy Day

Today has been a wet and rainy day so we entertained ourselves with lots of different stations! We had to put the finishing touches on our Earths! The kids have done a great job learning about the Earth and moon this week. They are very fascinated by it!

We also had some dress-up and dance time, did puzzles, played a dice game, and colored on BIG paper (which is much different to a child than coloring on normal sized paper!). Hopefully we will get outside later!

The past two weeks...

We have been very busy (as usual) with our activities but have also been spending a good amount of our day outside! I am thrilled that the winter was mild and didn't last well into March like it has in the past!

Last week we continued talking about Community Workers. The children really enjoy this topic as they get to learn about certain occupations and then pretend to have those jobs.

This week the children learned about the state of Iowa. This is a harder concept for them to grasp, but we now have down that Ames is the town we live in in the state of Iowa. They easily remembered the state flower, bird, tree, and what the flag looks like! They made excellent Iowa flags this weeks!
