Elephant Ears Recipe

1/4 cup of margarine or butter
1 cup of all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons of sugar
1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1/3 cup of milk
3 tablespoons of sugar
1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
Sugar

1. Heat the oven to 425 degrees.
2. Grease a cookie sheet with shortening.
3. Heat margarine until melted; set aside. Stir flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, the baking powder and salt in a medium bowl. Stir in milk and 3 tablespoons of the melted margarine until dough forms.
4. Sprinkle a surface lightly with flour; turn dough onto surface. Knead 10 times. Roll dough with a rolling pin or pat with hands into a rectangle, 9x5 inches. Brush with remaining melted margarine, using a pastry brush; sprinkle with mixture of 3 tablespoons sugar and the cinnamon.
5. Roll dough up tightly, beginning at narrow end. Pinch edge of dough into roll to seal. Cut into 4 equal pieces with sharp knife. Place cut sides up on cookie sheet; pat each into a 6-inch circle. Sprinkle with more sugar.
6. Bake until golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes. Immediately remove from cookie sheet with a spatula. Let cool on wire rack.

Bakers in the Making!

This week's theme is BAKING! The children have enjoyed baking with us before but this week they get to help bake a new recipe every day!!! Today we made Elephant Ears which turned out delicious. They didn't look quite as nice as the picture, but they were made with a lot of excitement! The children helped put the ingredients into the bowl, stir everything up, and kneed the dough. They also helped eat the finished product of course! Besides learning about how to bake, I also gave them a lesson on hygiene and keeping our hands clean before (and while) we bake! We will see if they remember that step tomorrow!!

We LOVE Thanksgiving!!

Last Wednesday we fixed a Thanksgiving meal for lunch and the children LOVED it! Stuffing was new for most of them, but everyone tried it.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is almost here! We have been busy teaching the children about Thanksgiving (although the depth of their understanding is still quite shallow)!! We have been talking about what we are thankful for and what we will eat! The children have made multiple turkey projects which have decorated the center the past week. Pictures will hopefully be posted soon of their projects!

We have also been teaching the children about giving/donating food. The children are starting to grasp the concept and have really enjoyed bringing canned items to put in our donation box that they got to decorate! We feel very fortunate to have all that we do and are excited to give to others while teaching the children about giving as well!

The holidays are approaching...

I am very excited that our theme for this week and next is THANKSGIVING!!! The holidays are such a wonderful time to spend with children as they are truly consumed in holiday excitement! We will be making multiple turkey crafts while also learning about what Thanksgiving is, why we celebrate it, and what foods we typically eat to celebrate it!! We will also be working on the children's understanding of being thankful and helpful to others. We will be collecting canned goods for donation next week as a way for the children to practice giving. We hope everyone is able to get in the Thanksgiving spirit in the next two weeks!!!

On an unrelated note, our LAST LITTLE TAILGATERS is THIS Saturday (Nov. 20th) from 4pm-10pm. Please let us know if you are interested in having your children attend!!!

Picnic in November?!!!

The children just LOVE to be outside so we were beside ourselves this week!! We played outside a long time (and were able to have a picnic) the past few days. We will take as many nice days as we can get before the cold comes!!

The children were proud to peel their own bananas!

A Day of Fun!!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!
The day was very fun! The children were adorable in their costumes and got to wear them in the morning and afternoon. The children loved all the crafts and activities that we did, the fun food, and the decorations!!

For the day of partying, we decorated trick-or-treat bags...

and we made masks...

and we ate YUMMY food!

We had Halloween cinnamon rolls for morning snack.

We had "worms" and "mummies" for lunch.
For afternoon snack the children decorated (and ate) Halloween cookies and had cider!
